It is the vision of the UM-Dearborn Alternative Breaks program to be a catalyst for students to create social change in communities in Metro Detroit and across the globe. Our mission is to provide opportunities for UM-Dearborn students to develop into active citizens through extensive service learning experiences in the community. Our program has the following goals:
- Enable opportunities to serve and make impact through personal and professional interests.
- Develop leadership opportunities for students through engagement with community.
- Foster partnerships with non-profit and community agencies to create positive change.
- Build communities of servant leaders.
- Promote socially just principles through service.
Alternative weekends are an opportunity for a group of UM-Dearborn students to travel to another location and volunteer there. Alternative weekends tend to be exchanges with other universities so that students from one university can educate and exchange ideas with students from another university. In 2013-2014, we will be planning multiple trips!
Alternative Spring Breaks (ASB)
Trips for Alternative Spring Break 2014 are focused around six core issues:
- Urban poverty
- Rural poverty & community development
- Environmental preservation
- Health access & poverty
- Social justice & LGBTQ
- Affordable housing
Over the 2013 spring break, groups of University of Michigan-Dearborn students served in West Virginia, Chicago, and Toronto! Between November and February, students helped plan their trips while fund-raising, developing team solidarity, and learning about the community they served.
Breaks are spent not only serving and learning in a community, but also enjoying team activities and exploring the area. After ASB, students relished in lasting friendships and apply new skills and interests in all areas of life.
We are looking for students to fill leadership roles for this year's upcoming 2014 Alternative Spring Break trips! If you are interested in applying to lead one of these trips, apply now! More information for those wishing to apply to be participants will be available by the start of the Fall Semester! Applications for site leaders are due by Friday, September 20, 2013.
